The first nurses monument outside of the Washington DC area will be dedicated on September 7th, 2018 at the Air Force Armament Museum, 100 Museum Drive, Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach, Florida at 10:00 am. The project is a joint collaboration between the Chapter 811 Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), Northwest Florida State College, and the Northwest Florida Daily News. The monument honors two civilian and two military nurses. The civilian nurses are Florence Nightingale and Linda Whitenton, who developed the first nursing program at Northwest Florida State College. The military nurses are Army 1st Lt. Annie Fox, chief nurse at Hickam Field Hospital during the December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and the first woman to receive the Purple Heart and Army 1st Lt. Sharon Lane who was killed in Vietnam by enemy fire. “Nurses are a first line of defense,” William Patterson, commander of Chapter 811 MOPH said at groundbreaking ceremonies for the monument. “Their assistance to us, (while we’re laying in a hospital looking for a better day), will always be remembered.” Members of the public and all nurses are invited to attend the dedication ceremony.

Lt Col Johnson, Chief Nurse 1st Special Operations Medical Group, Hurlburt Field, Colonel Shelton, Chief Nurse 96th Medical Group, Eglin AFB, and Colonel (retired) Teresa Ryan.
